Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus has a long and successful track-record in cardiovascular research and clinical care.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. A better understanding of heart and blood vessels illness leading to improved prevention and treatment strategies is therefore a major challenge.

In this context, Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus has a long and successful track-record in cardiovascular research and clinical care.

With more than 25 years of expertise in the field of cardiovascular research, CARIM is one of the largest academic research institutes of its kind in Europe. CARIM coordinates research in 13 different cardiovascular themes, crossing the boarders of research specialties in physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, pathology, cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, and other disciplines.

To translate research into clinical practice, CARIM works in close collaboration with the Heart-Vessel Centre (HVC) of the Academic Hospital Maastricht, under the name of the Cardiovascular Center Maastricht (CVC). This proximity allows faster translation of new research concepts into clinical practice. As such Maastricht Health Campus developed into a unique internationally recognized centre of excellence in cardiovascular medicine and research (including translational research and medical care).

The European Medical Training Center, better known as EM-TRAC, is an initiative of the Cardiovascular Center Maastricht. EM-TRAC offers an international medical teaching environment in which doctors and other healthcare professionals can increase their knowledge and skills in accordance with the latest developments in technology and science.

Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus is also a host to Medtronic Bakken research center. Medtronic is one of the world’s leaders in the medical devices industry. More particularly, the Bakken research center, which counts more than 300 employees, has a strong focus on cardiac rhythm and heart failure.

Our comprehensive ecosystem in the cardiovascular field is a key factor to create added value for regional players. Many innovative start-ups on the campus are having activities in the cardiovascular sector. This includes ACS Biomarker, Glycocheck, MyDiagnostick, FABpolous, VitaK, PieMedical Imaging, Synapse, Mirabilis, TripleMed and Bioactor.

All in all, Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus has a complete value chain in the cardiovascular sector. It combines excellence in academic research, training and medical care, together with experienced entrepreneurs and leading industrial R&D.
