Maastricht is proving to be a true bio-hub thanks to three major international conferences targeting the sector that will be held at MECC Maastricht. These three events are the annual European Conference on Biomaterials, followed by the European Congress on Biotechnology and finally, the Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB).

Dutch Startup Nestegg Biotech B.V. has been approved for a subordinated loan from Rabobank through their “AIL” program. The loans total €150.000 and will be used to bring new “Lab Automation” products to markets serving Dutch and Flemish research institutes and universities this fiscal year.

Mosa Meat hopes to receive approval in the next few years to sell the hamburger to the public. The 7.5 million Euros will be put towards increasing the scale of production and accelerating the process, among other things. Mosa Meat hopes to have a production location in the Netherlands within three years, and the first hamburgers are expected to cost around €8.50 each.

This is precisely what a Maastricht research group led by Prof. Dr. Marc Vooijs is going to study in mini-tumors that they will “cultivate” in the laboratory. The scientists will be receiving a 150,000 Euro subsidy from KWF Kankerbestrijding (Dutch Cancer Society) for this fundamental research on the diversity of the types of brain tumors that are (still) untreatable.
