The internationally acclaimed radiotherapy institute Maastro in Maastricht delivers cancer care in the Limburg region of the Netherlands, aiming to cure patients while preventing side effects of the provided treatments. All disciplines within Maastro contribute to this endeavour to optimally prepare and perform the treatments. Maastro is a state-of-the-art clinic with the latest imaging and radiotherapy equipment, and has started treating patients with proton therapy beginning 2019. Furthermore, we have well-established research groups and we work closely with Maastricht University and Maastricht University Hospital (MUMC+) in the fields of education, clinical and pre- clinical research.

For one of our research divisions, the division of Clinical Research, we are looking for a:

Post-doc researcher (36 hours/week)

The research division of Clinical Research focuses on studies aiming to preserve functional abilities of patients, e.g. by decreasing toxicity and improving quality of life, to integrate radiotherapy in systemic treatments (e.g. by combining radiotherapy with immune therapy), all this together with the patient (Shared Decision Making). Maastro both initiates clinical studies and contributes to national and international multi-centric trials. New concepts and medications are tested in phase Ib, II and III trials, this in close collaboration with Maastro Lab for translational research and the clinical departments of MUMC+. In 2018, 515 patients were included in clinical trials. Key is to implement the results of studies directly into clinical practice.

The position: Both radiotherapy and immunotherapy can lead to dose-limiting adverse effects in the lung and heart, known as “pneumonitis” and “myocarditis”. For research on cardiac and pulmonary toxicity in immuno-radiotherapy, including proton therapy, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher. You will be part of the Maastro Clinical Research team and involved in the design and coordination of clinical and translational biological research and conduct laboratory research on primary patient tissues from clinical samples (blood, organoids) to identify prognostic and predictive biomarkers for immuno-radiotherapy. Novel biomarkers will be validated in existing retrospective cohorts and prospective clinical trials. There will be a close collaboration with the clinical departments of the MUMC+.

To fit this position, you have:

  • A PhD degree in technical medicine, biology, biomedical sciences, pharmacology, or similar expertise;

  • Expertise in biomarker research;

  • Demonstrated experience in experimental laboratory research;

  • Experience or interest in oncology, especially in lung cancer and immune therapy;

  • Good language skills in English;

  • Willingness to write grants;

  • Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary


Conditions of employment and salary are based on the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Hospitals (CAO-Ziekenhuizen). You will receive a fulltime contract (36 hours/week) for an initial period of one year, which in case of a successful evaluation will be extended to a total period of

4 years. Your salary will be according to the salary scale FWG 60 (min. € 3.072,-, max. € 4.466,- depending on your relevant work experience). Within the collective labor agreement, there is an extensive package of fringe benefits, including a good pension arrangement, a 8.33% holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus and an excellent pension provision.
