Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM)

Aachen Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM) is a cross-border cooperation between Maastricht University and RWTH Aachen. AMIBM’s vision is to provide the missing link between basic and applied research and the market in bio-based materials. It aims to do this by changing the relationship between the production of bio-based materials and the value chain.

The goal is to achieve this by developing an integrated, interdisciplinary research program. The program focuses on new strategies to produce advanced bio-based materials in a sustainable and economical way. It also emphasizes the development of these novel materials into innovative products with high added value for technical and medical applications. AMIBM offers a unique approach covering the entire bio-based materials value chain, including raw materials (feedstock), polymers (materials) and the end products derived from them (applications). Applications include bio-based materials for medicine, environmental protection and industry applications.

The founding fathers of AMIBM are:

  • Maastricht University, Sciences, Department of Biobased Materials, located at Chemelot
  • Fraunhofer-Institut für Molekularbiologie und Angewandte Ökologie (IME), Aachen
  • Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA)-RWTH Aachen
  • Helmholtz Institut für Angewandte Medizintechnik (AME), Aachen

In 2013, the AMIBM named three Drehkreuzprofessoren: Rainer Fischer (Molecular Biotechnology), Stefan Jockenhövel (Tissue Engineering & Textile Implants) and Sanjay Rastogi (Polymer Physics). And as of the 1st of October 2015, Richard Ramakers was appointed as the new Managing Director for AMIBM.  Richard now leads the group in the development of AMIBM from the Brightlands Chemelot campus and maintains the connections with the projects home institutes in Aachen and Maastricht.

The AMIBM research program will be developed into a portfolio of projects in collaboration with industrial partners, other universities, research institutes and hospitals. AMIBM also develops infrastructure at Chemelot. Currently a bicomponent wet spinning facility is being set up to spin biopolymers into fibers at low temperatures. This facility will be developed to produce fibers for clinical applications under GMP conditions.

Maastricht University and RWTH Aachen University are internationally renowned academic institutes with complementary basic and applied research programs focusing on bio-based materials. AMIBM offers a combination of expertise and infrastructure that provides the ideal environment for the development of innovative, industry-focused research under the AMIBM concept.
