Maastricht Science Programme
The Maastricht Science Programme of Maastricht University is using over 500 square meters of laboratories on the Chemelot Campus for education. In these dedicated laboratories, our bachelor students follow practical training in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. The Maastricht Science Programme is structured as a ‘Liberal Arts & Science’ programme providing education in the Natural Sciences.
The education provided by the Maastricht Science Programme is student centred, actively using problem based learning (PBL) and research based learning (RBL). Students build their own curriculum and follow courses (mainly in Maastricht), practical training (mainly at Chemelot) and projects. In addition, they get the opportunity to work a full semester on a research project, which is completed with a bachelor thesis. This research can take place in an academic setting or as an internship or assignment within a company.
With financial support of the Province of Limburg the three-year bachelor programme has started in 2011 with 50 students from 15 different countries and has grown to 200 students from 50 different countries. It is anticipated that the programme, within a few years, can grow to 100-120 new students/year, thus making a significant contribution to reducing the deficit in beta-knowledge workers.
The Maastricht Science Programme Chemelot laboratories are equipped with modern chemical and biological equipment. Analytical facilities include Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GS-MS), Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS), Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Rheology, UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, there are facilities for molecular and cell biological work, such as PCR, incubators and laminar flow cabinets.
