IBA Parkstad

The concept of IBA (Internationale Bau Ausstellung) originated in Germany more than a hundred years ago. What started as an exhibition for modern construction developed into a successful formula that gives a powerful boost to economy, space and society in a region or city.

Parkstad consists of eight municipalities in the former Oostelijke Mijnstreek: Brunssum, Heerlen, Kerkrade, Landgraaf, Onderbanken, Simpelveld, Nuth and Voerendaal. Schinnen is also affiliated to IBA Parkstad, because Schinnen, Onderbanken and Nuth will continue in 2019 as the municipality of Beekdaelen. These nine municipalities are characterized by the mine closures in the seventies of the last century. This led to social problems, high unemployment, aging and young people moving away. The region has too many homes, business parks, retail and office spaces, school buildings, community centers and churches. The area must 'grow back' while remaining attractive to live and work.

IBA Parkstad
Parkstad applies the IBA method until 2020. Innovative ideas are retrieved from the region and beyond. Experts devote themselves to leading projects and identify the opportunities they offer the region. In addition, IBA adds value to projects, both substantively and financially. With the aim: to improve projects and thus the region. Bureau IBA Parkstad guides, connects and stimulates projects. In 2020 the projects will be shown in an exhibition as an example of renewal in construction. The impact of the projects on the living environment is also made transparent.
