The still relatively young Maastricht University has built a very strong reputation in the field of academic research. Students from all over the world consciously opt for the problem-based education offered at the Netherlands’ most international university. Half of the students and four out of ten academics come from abroad. Many of Maastricht University's study programs tie in with Brightlands themes. The university links the sciences to insights on the economy, the knowledge of behavioral change, law, health, Europe, culture and much more.
Zuyd University of Applied Sciences
Zuyd University of Applied Sciences is an institution of higher education focusing on three core activities: education for students, research for companies and institutions, and training and education for professionals. Based on the conviction that the 21st century is about more than just knowledge but mainly the ability to apply this knowledge, Zuyd works closely with companies, knowledge and other institutes and governments. Many students at Zuyd take classes and gain practical experience at the Brightlands campuses.
Fontys University of Applied Sciences
Fontys University of Applied Sciences has set the goal of providing inspiring, challenging and high-quality higher professional education, facilitating practice-oriented research and contributing to practical innovations that are relevant to society. Fontys aims to be a learning community. Given these principles, the partnership with Brightlands is a logical choice.
HAS University of Applied Sciences
HAS University of Applied Sciences focuses on higher-vocational and bachelor's programs in agriculture, food and the living environment. The HAS focuses on three core activities: education, knowledge transfer and knowledge development. In Limburg, HAS has a branch in Venlo, where it also works closely with the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo.
VISTA College is the new name for the secondary vocational education institution in Southern Limburg which resulted from the merger between Arcus College and ROC Leeuwenborgh in 2019. VISTA College wants to continue to be able to offer broad and modern education in the region in the future. Students from several VISTA programs also take classes at the Brightlands campuses.
The CITAVERDE College organization offers “green education” at four locations in Limburg at the pre-vocational secondary and senior secondary vocational education levels. CITAVERDE educates students who want to grow to become professionals focused on man, animals and nature, both in cities and their outskirts. The school offers 38 different secondary vocational education programs in the fields of nature, agriculture, animals, retail, design and food.
Gilde Education and Training
Gilde Education and Training has branches in Northern and Central Limburg and in Geleen that train pre-vocational education students to become the professionals of tomorrow. One of the basic tenets held by Gilde Education and Training is that innovation is indispensable for education, from minor improvements to major changes. This makes the potential link with Brightlands obvious.
The Open University (OU) is a university in the Netherlands offering programs for part-time education. Students follow interactive education online, and can perform disciplinary research in various scientific fields. They can complete university bachelor and master’s degree programs in seven different disciplines. The OU has eleven branches in the Netherlands, and six in Belgium. The main office is located in Heerlen. Brightlands and OU work together in several areas.

CHILL, or Chemelot Innovation and Learning Labs, offers an innovative learning, working and research environment where companies and knowledge institutes work together to develop knowledge and new products. These organizations range from start-ups to multinationals, participated in by students in pre-vocational, higher vocational and university-level education. CHILL was founded as a partnership between SABIC, DSM, VISTA College, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and Maastricht University, and is based at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus. As a Centre of Expertise (CoE, higher vocational education) and Centre for Innovative Craftsmanship (CIV, pre-vocational education) CHILL helps shape and add substance to Dutch top sector policy.
