Underwriters Laboratories and Brightlands Materials Center announce collaboration

november 9, 2016

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global safety science organization, and Brightlands Materials Center, a new research and development center in the field of polymeric materials and their applications, announce the signing of a Letter of Intent in which the two organizations will collaborate to provide joint Additive Manufacturing (AM) training to the emerging markets using this new technology. The goal of the relationship is to promote the advancement of AM technologies to the global manufacturing industry.

“Brightlands Materials Center’s goal is to bring together entrepreneurial and innovative companies, leading academic researchers and the next generation of top talent in inspiring R&D programs with the long term vision to boost sustainable development in the field of materials” said Marnix van Gurp, Managing Director of Brightlands Materials Center. “AM is one of the most promising emerging manufacturing technologies for materials of today. We are excited to collaborate with UL to extend advancements in innovation, safety and quality of AM materials.”

Brightlands Material Center will offer UL’s three-tier AM training curriculum onsite at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus (BCC) in Sittard-Geleen, The Netherlands. The curriculum, which spans introductory industry knowledge through more advanced design, and technical and hands-on AM learning, focuses on the continued learning and development of AM technical and business professionals. Initially, Brightlands Materials Center will deliver the first two tiers of the curriculum which includes foundational level learning as well as more complex design, material, process, business and quality and safety courses.

Brightlands Materials Center and UL will launch the training initiative during the 3D Printing Materials Conference, February 2nd 2017, at the BCC. That day, conference attendees will be able to attend single-day versions of the UL AM training workshops; “Selecting AM Materials & Processes,” and “Fundamentals of AM Designs.”

Simin Zhou, Vice President of UL Digital Manufacturing Technologies: “Our vision is to collaborate with the additive manufacturing industry to further develop innovation, safety and quality. We see this new relationship with Brightlands Materials Center as a natural extension of that vision. Their demonstrated commitment to AM via material, service and facility development is a perfect complement to UL’s AM training, facility safety, and material and process programs. We look forward to expanding AM knowledge throughout Europe together.”

As the relationship evolves, UL and Brightlands Materials Center intend to collaborate on AM material research, testing and certification, and the development of an AM center of excellence.
