Brightlands Chemelot Campus marks new phase in development

November 16, 2016, Center Court at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen will be officially opened. Center Court marks a new phase in the campus development.

Brightlands Chemelot Campus develops steadily into the largest innovation community for sustainable materials and chemical processes in the Netherlands. With state-of-the-art research laboratories, 3D printers, pilot plants and educational facilities. With Center Court the campus offers an ultra-modern meeting center with the newest accommodations for restaurants, meetings and congresses. Maastricht University, Chemelot Innovation and Learning Labs (CHILL), DSM Innovation Center, Chemelot Ventures and the Brightlands Chemelot Campus organization are also located in the building.

Brightlands Chemelot Campus is an initiative of the Province of Limburg, Maastricht University and DSM. The campus officially started in 2012 and since then it grew from 900 to 1,900 knowledge workers and 650 students. The campus community is represented by 75 organizations, including large companies such as DSM, SABIC and Arlanxeo, innovative SMEs and start-ups, public/private research institutes in the fields of biomedical and bio-based materials and educational programs at vocational and academic levels. Objective is to grow to 2,900 knowledge workers, 1,000 students and 100 organizations in 2023.

Brightlands Chemelot Campus 2012-2016
The growth of the campus community is possible thanks to initiatives of various parties and investments in state-of-the-art facilities to stimulate research, education and new business. A few highlights of the last years:

  • New head office for Arlanxeo (2013)
  • New research center for DSM Engineering Plastics (2014)
  • New research center for SABIC in the fields chemistry and materials (2016)
  • Development Pilot Plant Zone, with facilities for Chemelot InSciTe, Flowid, Chemtrix, Technoforce, Sappi and Avantium (2016); start construction pilot plants for DSM Advanced Services (2016) and SABIC (2016)
  • New laboratory for Isobionics (2015)
  • Expansion cleanroom facilities for PhamaCell
  • Start research institutes, notably Brightlands Materials Center (2016), Chemelot InSciTe (2015) and Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (2016)
  • Research programs for CHILL (2012) and Maastricht University (2012)
  • Brightlands Innovation Factory (2016)
  • Investments in 3D printers for research, education and companies (including Xilloc).
