Winner Brightlands Innovation Challenge 2017

march 14, 2017

Brightlands organized its first Brightlands Innovation Challenge. The competition stimulates cross-border and interdisciplinary collaboration for new and innovative Life Sciences projects. These include initiatives that connect disciplines or researchers from different institutes. Aart van Apeldoorn and Martin Paine of Maastricht University (MERLN/M4I) won the first Brightlands Innovation Challenge and received an award of EUR 10,000 to initiate their project.

The jury, consisting of Jan Cobbenhagen (CEO, Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus), Ger Koopmans (representative of the Province of Limburg) and Michel Dumontier (Professor Faculty of Humanities and Sciences) received 28 submissions from which it chose three finalists who presented their proposals during the event. During the event, delegates had the opportunity to create and submit a project as well. A fourth nominee was chosen out of these projects.

Proposals were judged for their innovation, interdisciplinary nature, the solutions they offer to the kind of challenges we come across at the Brightlands Campuses, and added value for individuals and and society as a whole.

At the end of the day the jury, chaired by Prof. dr. Jan Cobbenhagen, chose Aart van Apeldoorn and Martin Paine of Maastricht University (MERLN/M4I), title of their project: Transforming Transplants: A multi-omic approach in Smart Material Design for Type 1 Diabetes Treatment.

Brightlands Science Forum
The Brightlands Innovation Challenge was being held during the Brightlands Science Forum, an interactive and interdisciplinary event, organized alongside The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF). This world's leading art fair formed the backdrop for inspiring introductions and updates on the latest developments in the field of imaging, which is why the forum was named ‘The Art of Imaging’. Ron Heeren (M4I) fulfilled the role of moderator throughout the program.
