Major boost for partnership between Chengdu (China) and Brightlands Maastricht Health Campusoctober 23, 2017
Goal: a joint venture capital fund of 64 million Euros for investments in life sciences and health care
Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus welcomed a four-man delegation from the Chinese Chengdu Wenjiang District, spearheaded by Mayor Chen Zhiyong. The goal of the visit was to study the possibility of creating a joint venture capital fund to support start-ups operating at the Maastricht campus. The target amount of this fund is RMB 500 million (approximately 64 million Euros); the first round of financial capital is expected to total 30 million RMB (around 3.8 million Euros).
Prof. Dr. Jan Cobbenhagen, CEO of Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, did the honors and officially welcomed the delegation. The two parties discussed the objectives, the approach and the possibilities for joint investments. The Chinese delegation visited the high-quality scanners at Scannexus, among other locations. The visitors were impressed by the research power and possibilities at the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, and the Univenture/Brightlands Life Science Venture investment report.
The signing of the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for the Chinese-Dutch investment fund by both parties represents an important step towards the continued collaboration and the strategic partnership between Maastricht and Chengdu Medical City. Both parties are looking forward to bringing the project to the next phase as soon as possible.
Located in northwestern Chengdu, the Wenjiang District is known as being a pioneer thanks to the extensive reform of small and medium-sized enterprises focused on the development of the health chain and the medical industry. Wenjiang has founded the medical city of Chengdu which is characterized by the innovation of the medical sciences, treatments and medicine.
