Innovative and ambitious projects
Brightlands is running an impressive number of innovative and ambitious projects, all of which attest to first-rate research and result in outstanding teaching and superior health care. Brightlands is the place to be to conduct groundbreaking studies and take important steps forward in health, nutrition, and materials.
The Maastricht Study
The Maastricht Study is a unique look into the prevalence, causes, and treatment of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases in the Maastricht Aachen region. Brightlands assesses Study participants at the start and then again five years later. Its aim is to understand why one person develops type 2 diabetes and another does not. Ultimately, the Maastricht Study will make a significant contribution to combating a wide range of diseases.

Scannexus is establishing a European Center of Excellence for ultra-high magnetic field MRI and neuroscience at Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus. Using three fMRI scanners with ultra-high magnetic fields of 3.0, 7.0 and 9.4 Tesla, the integrated platform provides scientists and companies with the means to find the key to common diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, epilepsy, and MS, and gain more insight into the evolution of human behavior.
Scannexus' mission aims to bridge the gap between research and industry, and establish spin-offs is essential to that process. Scannexus therefore also provides value creation for knowledge and stimulates entrepreneurship in mental health care and cognitive neuroscience.

Unhealthy lifestyles are a growing social problem, especially in South Limburg, the southernmost part of the Netherlands. Obesity, COPD, cardiovascular mortality, and other products of an unhealthy way of life are visibly above average there. Preventive health care through interventions in behavior and lifestyle can help combat the problem and the Mosae Vita project—located at Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus—aims to achieve breakthroughs in early detection, prevention, and effective treatment by focusing on nutrition and exercise. Mosae Vita plans to create new alliances and provide an integrated platform focusing on detection, prevention, and effective treatment that involves the end-user at an early stage. It aims to build on collaboration between industry, government, and research institutes to accelerate innovations in knowledge and technology.
